From mid-March, the fishing season for Hokkaido's cherry salmon (sakuramasu) begins. For cherry salmon fishing, the rule is simple: you must fish from a boat. Boarding a licensed boat automatically gives you the necessary permissions.
By the way, shore casting for cherry salmon often gets hyped up in magazines and online. But let me be blunt—how does it really fare? Well, shore casting for cherry salmon is so incredibly low in success rate that even local anglers rarely attempt it. Sure, there are some anglers who can consistently catch fish from the shore, but they are rare exceptions, boasting absurd amounts of experience and years of effort. This isn’t something just anyone can replicate overnight.
To give you a sense of the odds: even if you go every morning for a week straight, you’d be lucky to catch one fish during that entire time. The real culprits behind the overblown hype? Japan's fishing tackle manufacturers. As long as their lures and gear sell, they couldn’t care less about the actual success rates. Every year, they whip up exaggerated excitement about shore fishing for cherry salmon to boost demand for their products.
With that in mind, don’t let yourself get swept up by shallow information online, in fishing papers, or on social media—posts that claim “Anyone can easily catch cherry salmon from the shore! And for free!” That kind of naïve misunderstanding will only lead to disappointment.
In reality, when someone lucky enough to land a cherry salmon posts on social media, it causes a frenzy, and suddenly hordes of anglers flood the shoreline. But guess what? The overwhelming majority of them leave without a single bite. This kind of hype is an internet-era classic, though thankfully, it’s starting to calm down compared to previous years.
Even seasoned local anglers in Hokkaido describe shore fishing for cherry salmon as a gamble—a fishing equivalent of buying a lottery ticket. The world isn’t that generous. For anglers traveling long distances with limited chances, choosing to fish from a boat is the obvious choice.
The weather tends to stabilize from mid-April onward. Before that, during the early part of the season in March, the weather is often volatile, with frequent storms. This makes it a particularly challenging period for visiting anglers who come solely for fishing.
Around early March, cherry salmon start getting caught offshore via vertical jigging. In years where vertical jigging remains viable, this method can continue until mid-April. However, once the weather starts stabilizing around mid-April, things can change. Marine mammals like seals and dolphins might increase offshore, making fishing impossible. These factors are so unpredictable that even the most experienced local captains struggle to forecast them.
When cherry salmon are no longer biting offshore, they start moving closer to shore. At that point, fishing transitions from vertical jigging to casting, targeting fish near the surface. From mid-April onward, boat casting becomes the main technique.
Ultimately, the best time for cherry salmon fishing—with stable weather, higher fish counts, and better odds—starts after mid-April. From mid-April to the end of May, you’ll find it much easier to catch cherry salmon.

實際上,每當有人幸運地在SNS上炫耀釣到櫻鱒後,海邊就會湧入大量本地釣魚人。但結果是,絕大多數人空手而歸。這種現象在互聯網時代屢見不鮮。不過,最近幾年相比以前,這種現象稍微平息了一些。
對於北海道的資深釣友來說,岸釣櫻鱒就像一場“抽獎”。釣魚可不是那麼簡單的事。 如果是遠道而來、時間有限的釣魚人,毫不猶豫地選擇船釣吧。

During this period, a standard offshore light jigging rod is more than sufficient. A rod length of 6–7 feet with an ML (Medium Light) power is ideal. Either a baitcasting reel or spinning reel will work, but the critical aspect of vertical jigging is knowing the exact depth between the surface and your hook.

That said, fishing is primarily a tactile activity, so there’s no need to overthink it. Use PE line as your mainline and nylon for your leader. Keeping your leader length around 5 meters is advisable, as it helps prevent dangerous line slippage at the water's edge—a mistake inexperienced anglers frequently make, earning them sharp rebukes from captains or guides.
As for jigs, a variety of sizes have proven effective, and you should adapt to the conditions of the fishing grounds. If you want to maximize efficiency, the unique “Shakotan-style jigging rig” is a great option.
For beginners, assembling all this gear on your own and getting it perfectly set up is often challenging. When hiring a guide, it’s best to leave everything to them—it’s the smartest choice in terms of both time and cost.
Mid-April and Beyond: Casting from a Boat
At this time, a standard seabass rod is an excellent choice. A rod length of 8–9 feet with ML power is ideal. A spinning reel is the most suitable option—there is absolutely no advantage to using a baitcasting reel for this type of fishing. Choosing a baitcasting reel for “style points” is entirely your prerogative, but let me tell you: there’s no one left in today’s world who thinks that’s ‘cool.’ It’s purely self-satisfaction.
The same logic applies to lures, particularly minnows. Japan’s tackle manufacturers make the most profit from selling minnows. If you wish to support their sales figures, feel free to use their expensive minnows. If you catch fish with them, it’s entirely up to you to promote their products for free. As for whether you’ll receive a thank-you letter from them… well, I wouldn’t count on it.

That’s why renting gear at the start is the wisest choice.

4月中旬以後:船上拋投釣法
此時,普通的海鱸竿會是一個非常合適的選擇。竿長建議為8至9英尺,硬度適合ML(中等偏軟)。建議使用紡車式卷線器,沒必要特意選擇鼓式卷線器。這種釣法對使用鼓式卷線器沒有任何好處。選擇鼓式卷線器純粹是因為“帥氣”的話,那就是個人的自由了。不過我要補充一句:現代社會中已經沒有人認為那是‘帥氣’的行為了。 這純粹是自我滿足罷了。

Cherry salmon fishing in Hokkaido is surprisingly underappreciated, even within Japan. In Honshu, catching cherry salmon in rivers is common practice—or rather, its near impossibility has earned it the nickname “phantom fish.” However, in Hokkaido, cherry salmon fishing is strictly limited to the ocean. Targeting them in rivers is entirely prohibited.
This unique setting—fishing in the ocean rather than in rivers—is likely the primary reason why Japanese anglers tend to shy away from this pursuit. Anglers don’t fish purely for the sake of catching. Many value the overall experience: the beauty of the surroundings, the immersion in nature, and the sense of leisure.
That said, Hokkaido’s ocean fishing opportunities are as plentiful as one might expect. Cherry salmon is by no means a rare catch here. In fact, their catches have recently become more consistent than even autumn salmon. Some anglers from Honshu, frustrated by the near-zero success rates of cherry salmon fishing back home, venture all the way to Hokkaido to try their luck with this species.
But let me remind you once again: in Hokkaido, cherry salmon are strictly off-limits in rivers. If you wish to target them, you’re limited to the brief spring season when they’re still in the ocean. Specifically, in the Shakotan Peninsula area, the season begins as early as March. They can occasionally be found in December through February, but their small size and low abundance make them less attractive to target during these months. It’s truly astonishing how much a young yamame trout, which descended to the sea just one winter prior, can grow into such a magnificent size.
Now, let me share an established fact: Shakotan Peninsula is the greatest stronghold of cherry salmon in Japan. This conclusion is backed by extensive research conducted over many years by the Fisheries Agency and other related organizations. Without delving into too many details, suffice it to say that Shakotan Peninsula boasts the highest density and the largest cherry salmon in the country.
Every year, cherry salmon exceeding 6 kilograms are caught here—though such giants are rare, specimens over 4 kilograms are relatively common. This is the undeniable allure of spring fishing in Shakotan Peninsula.
And what does a 4-kilogram-plus cherry salmon look like? Take a look at this 4.4-kilogram beauty. With a body shape resembling a rugby ball, these fish are known locally as "Ita Masu" (Board Salmon) due to their extraordinary body depth. Given their robust build, you can only imagine the sheer power and excitement they bring to the fight.
It’s worth noting that while there are plenty of cherry salmon enthusiasts in Japan, this world-class fishing experience—available casually and reliably every spring in Shakotan Peninsula—is still surprisingly underappreciated.
Consider this: instead of spending a fortune to travel to remote parts of Russia via third countries to catch scrawny cherry salmon in rivers, wouldn’t it make more sense to experience such exceptional fishing right here in Japan?
By the way, cherry salmon are known as Cherry Salmon in English. Some Japanese anglers tend to look down on them compared to autumn salmon, but let me remind you: cherry salmon are unequivocally a member of the salmon family. And in terms of taste? The rich, fatty flavor of cherry salmon surpasses autumn salmon by a long shot.
In an era when natural salmon populations across the Northern Hemisphere are declining, the value of Hokkaido’s cherry salmon fishery could attract far more attention and appreciation—not from Japan’s overly traditionalist anglers, but from overseas anglers who truly recognize its worth.

順帶一提,櫻鱒在英語中被稱為 Cherry Salmon。日本釣友或許有將櫻鱒視為低於秋季大馬哈魚的傾向,但事實上,櫻鱒在生物分類上是正統的「鮭魚」一員。在口感方面,櫻鱒脂肪豐厚,其鮮美程度更是遠勝於秋鮭。

From mid-April onward, as the weather stabilizes, anglers can enjoy not just salmon fishing but also another equally thrilling activity—rockfish fishing. Yes, we’re talking about the fun of targeting soi (black rockfish).
Between mid-April and late May, these soi come into the shallow rocky areas to spawn. While salmon fishing is usually best in the early morning, here’s the game plan: you start with salmon fishing at dawn. Once the spot gets overfished and the salmon seem to disappear, move the boat and switch to jigging for these spawn-driven soi gathering in the shallows.
You could prepare a dedicated setup, but most folks just repurpose their salmon casting gear for this. After all, you’re already using a PE line, and the 40g metal jigs for casting work perfectly for this jigging style. All you need to do is cast the jig lightly around the boat, let it sink, and then retrieve it while giving the jig some action by reeling or jerking the rod. It’s not a particularly tricky technique, so even beginners can manage just fine.
Since these soi are here for spawning, you’ll have the chance to catch some unusually large specimens, which are otherwise rare. Some of the bigger ones can weigh close to 4 kg, as seen in the photo. And if you’re lucky, you might also stumble upon schools of massive hokke (Atka mackerel) up to 50 cm long—something unique to Hokkaido. Hit the jackpot with these schools, and it’s practically nonstop action.
And the best part? They’re all absolutely delicious.
If everything goes right, you could end up with a haul of salmon, monster soi, and monster hokke—all in one trip! The peak season for these rockfish is from mid-April to early May. In fact, some seasoned anglers actually prioritize this over salmon fishing because the results are so rewarding.
And let’s face it—salmon are “nomads.” There are days when, no matter how much effort you put in, the salmon just aren’t there. That’s why having a solid backup like this is nothing short of amazing.

這時候的曹魚因為參與產卵,常常能釣到平時罕見的大型個體,甚至有重量接近4公斤的巨型曹魚。而如果運氣好,還可能碰到北海道特有的**大齒鱈(hokke)**魚群,個頭能到50厘米,遇上魚群幾乎就是每拋必中!
而且,這些魚的美味都是公認的。

Spring’s Catch: The Joy of Culinary Delight
Come April, the cherry salmon (Oncorhynchus masou) reaches its peak size, its flesh rich with fat, making it one of the finest ingredients nature can offer. Most people know that salmonid fish ascend rivers to spawn once they mature. But surprisingly, few understand when and at what stage they are at their culinary best.
In the case of cherry salmon, the yamame trout that descended to the sea the previous summer journey along the coastline of Hokkaido’s Sea of Japan, venturing as far as the Hokuriku and San'in offshore regions of Honshu. During this migration, they gorge themselves, growing rapidly, and by winter, they return to the southern coastal waters of Hokkaido. Unfortunately, wild cherry salmon cannot be consumed raw straight away. Why? Because it is common for wild specimens to harbor parasites. To prepare them for sashimi, sushi, or carpaccio, they must first undergo freezing treatment. A typical household freezer doesn’t have enough power; you’ll need a commercial-grade low-temperature freezer or a chest freezer capable of maintaining below -20°C for at least 48 hours to completely eliminate parasites. This has become common knowledge among those in Hokkaido who prepare fish they’ve caught.
The finest cherry salmon—those rugby ball-shaped, so-called “plank salmon” (ita-masu)—have tender flesh and a vibrant orange hue characteristic of salmon. Sometimes, their fat content is so high that the orange appears faint or even white. The blades of your knife may turn white with fat during filleting. These natural “plank salmon” are rare on the market, occasionally appearing at select high-end sushi restaurants. Yet, catching and savoring such a prized fish with your own hands is a privilege reserved exclusively for anglers.
The flavor of top-tier wild cherry salmon is exceptional. It boasts the rich umami characteristic of salmon, complemented by a smooth, refined fat content—far removed from the greasy quality of farmed salmon. This is elegance in its purest form.
