Hokkaido's Mountain Stream Char Fishing, Guided by Expert Mountain Guides.

For those who aspire to master the art of char fishing in Japan, there is one place that simply cannot be ignored: Hokkaido.

As Japan's northernmost region, Hokkaido is blessed with vast mountainous terrain, home to countless untouched and unexplored hidden streams. Naturally, this makes it a paradise for char fishing. To put it simply, Hokkaido's char resources exist on an entirely different level compared to those of Honshu.

From the sheer number and density of the fish to their size, everything about char fishing in Hokkaido is overwhelmingly superior—so much so that comparisons with Honshu are almost inappropriate. Many anglers in Japan are well aware of this, and those who have been captivated by the allure of fishing for char in Honshu’s mountain streams often dream of one day reaching the ultimate destination: Hokkaido’s hidden fields of paradise, which we are about to introduce.

What is the true value of char fishing?

When it comes to guiding fishing trips in Hokkaido with char as the main target, one must overcome a variety of hurdles. First and foremost, it is essential to recognize that anglers’ interests are largely concentrated on fishing for char in the mountain streams deep within the wilderness, where this species’ allure is at its peak. As you may already know, however, in Hokkaido, char fishing is not limited to mountain streams. A classic example would be the sea-run char (ame-masu) found in the ocean and lakes. Depending on the season, it’s even possible to catch Hokkaido char in the lower reaches of rivers, meaning there’s no absolute need to venture into the remote mountain streams to enjoy char fishing in Hokkaido.

And yet… in reality, most anglers desire to fish for char amidst the breathtaking scenery of pristine mountain streams and headwaters. This is, quite frankly, a matter of the “angler’s” unique sense of values. It is precisely by aligning with these values that the need for guiding services arises. We believe that committing to and fulfilling this perspective is the very essence of what a fishing guide should strive for.

Kamuy’s char fishing guides are conducted primarily in mountain streams and headwaters.

Why, you ask? Imagine this: if a guide were to tell their clients, “Don’t worry, you can catch char here too!” and then lead them to some ordinary coastline or fishing port, the clients would undoubtedly be outraged. Well… there’s no need to elaborate further. For those who have taken the time to explore this website, this is likely a shared, unspoken “value” that we all implicitly understand.

The real issue lies in the inherent risks that come with fishing in mountain streams and headwaters. The most significant risks are “injury and getting lost.” Unlike guiding for rainbow trout or Sakhalin taimen, char fishing guides do not involve the use of boats, which drastically amplifies the level of risk. In char fishing, the burden of physically navigating the terrain falls entirely on the client’s own strength.

Kamuy

Kamuy’s Unique Skill Evaluation System

At Kamuy, all guided trips into mountain streams and headwaters—where clients must rely on their own feet to reach fishing spots—are conducted using a unique skill evaluation system. In short, this system acts as Kamuy’s proprietary “safety mechanism,” designed to prevent inexperienced anglers from overestimating their abilities and venturing into dangerous, uncharted territory far beyond their limits.

While we’ll only touch on the basics here, Kamuy categorizes its guided fishing trips into five distinct levels of difficulty. It begins with Level 1, the most casual and safest option, where clients simply wade into nearby streams a short distance from their vehicle. In contrast, Levels 4 and 5 involve multi-day expeditions, where clients carry backpacks weighing over 10 kilograms, set up campsites, and traverse challenging terrain over several days.

Regardless of their background or prior experience, every client is required—without exception—to start at Level 1. From there, clients progress step by step, with their abilities assessed accurately and objectively by the guide based on actual guided trips. This ensures a rational system that not only guarantees safety but also allows clients to challenge themselves at higher levels with confidence as they develop their skills.

Kamuy

The Importance of Trust Between Guide and Client

Kamuy’s guides for char fishing in mountain streams and headwaters are licensed mountain guides, officially certified by Hokkaido’s local authorities. Since clients are entering potentially dangerous fields where risks of accidents and getting lost depend heavily on their own physical capabilities, a guide’s role naturally extends far beyond fishing knowledge and skills.

These guides possess a deep understanding of mountain-related risks and never underestimate them. Consequently, they often demand high levels of safety awareness and responsible behavior from their clients. For those who lack this awareness, a guide stop may be enforced—this is not uncommon. In fact, there have been cases where misunderstandings between clients and guides arise in the field due to these safety measures.

Taking these factors into account, it goes without saying that building a strong relationship of trust between guide and client is absolutely essential. For this very reason, Kamuy’s char fishing experiences above Level 2 are reserved exclusively for members only.

Introduction to Mountain Stream Fishing Routes by Difficulty.

Level 1 Char Fishing Fields

The Level 1 designated mountain stream areas are where most people can enjoy fishing safely and comfortably, without feeling overly tense or pushing their limits. Equipped with standard waders and no need to carry heavy gear, these fields allow for a casual yet rewarding fishing experience amidst Hokkaido’s abundant char populations.

Why not bring along a sandwich or bento, brew some coffee by the picturesque stream, and indulge in a relaxing lunch? Take a deep breath of the forest’s invigorating scent, and let it refresh your spirit.

For those who already have experience with this style of fishing, Level 1 provides an excellent opportunity for your guide to evaluate whether you are truly ready to tackle the more demanding terrain of higher levels. The guide will carefully observe your abilities during the trip and may even offer valuable advice, such as suggesting that you refine your skills further at this level before moving on.

Level 1 is the crucial starting point—your gateway to everything that lies ahead.

Level 1

Level 2 Char Fishing Fields

Rivers with steep gradients, their waters crashing forcefully over rocks… These are the quintessential mountain streams. However, from this point onward, caution becomes paramount.

A single misstep leading to a fall and the inability to walk could spell disaster. If you can’t make it back to a safe area, the situation could escalate to a survival crisis. In the worst-case scenario, you might require the intervention of a rescue team or even a helicopter.

At Kamuy, char fishing experiences from Level 2 and above are exclusively reserved for members. This is only natural, as specialized equipment, precise movement techniques, and seamless teamwork with your guide become essential.

Above all else, the most critical element is the trust between you and your guide. This goes without saying.

Level 3 Char Fishing Fields

Once a guest member has proven their abilities in Level 2 and their guide declares, “You’re ready to take on an even more challenging field!”, they unlock access to the coveted Level 3.

The difference between Level 2 and Level 3 lies in the length and difficulty of the approach. These are truly wild and rugged fishing areas, yet still designed to ensure a safe return within the same day.

For those who crave authentic adventure and have earned the trust of their guide, Level 3 offers a gateway to the next tier of fishing mastery.

Fishing Fields for Levels 4-5 Iwana Trout

The difference from Level 3 is clear. Starting from Level 4, it’s no longer a day trip—camping in the mountain streamsbecomes essential. Gathering firewood, lighting a fire… under a sky full of stars, you enjoy cooking the Iwana you caught, sipping on whiskey… and indulge yourself in the unparalleled joy of fishing for Iwana in Hokkaido.

There are quite a few people who say, “I’ve always wanted to do something like this someday,” and once they get hooked, they can’t get enough. Every summer, groups with such passion set aside a week to search for Hokkaido’s most remote hidden streams.

Level 4 involves ultra-long routes that require camping as a prerequisite. Level 5, on the other hand, not only features long routes but also necessitates the use of specialized mountain climbing gear to conquer high-difficulty terrain.

The Monsters of Hokkaido’s Mountain Streams

How many trout truly inhabit the remote, hidden streams of Hokkaido? Just imagining it is enough to make your heart race. And to be perfectly honest, the reality is far beyond your imagination.

Take, for example, the fishing trips from 2024 alone—what a spectacle! The largest Iwana caught was an incredible 81 centimeters. Not in a lake, not in the sea, but in a small mountain stream. Of course, catching such a monstrous Iwana isn’t something that happens every day, but fish over 60 centimeters? They’re almost commonplace.

In some cases, a single deep pool can yield five or six fish of that size in quick succession, slamming into ultralight or fly tackle and thrashing about wildly. For anyone who enjoys mountain stream fishing for Iwana in Japan, this would undoubtedly be a dream come true—a once-in-a-lifetime experience you’d never forget.
