Are any season available fishing in Hokkaido?
We have some national holidays, and many Japanese enjoy outing. So fishing areas are crowed with those people. Especially in a holiday called “Golden Week” which is from Apr 29 through May 5/6 that has consecutive national holidays, we would suggest not to schedule your trip if possible. This is because this holiday is just as “Lunar Year” in China. We also have “Silver Week” from Sep. 15 to 17 and Sep. 22 to 24 2018, which is predicted to be crowded as well. From Aug. 10 to 16 every year, it isn’t a national holidays but it is treated as the ones called “Obon holiday”. The week is packed everywhere in Japan, so you might have to keep it in your mind.
How many days are required for a trip? I want to make my plan better as much as possible.
We have to consider that we might not be able to go fishing depending on the weather. Japanese river water level changes often according to the periodical action of low pressure with typhoon and the front. Once heavy rain comes to the mountains, the water becomes muddy and runs high in the river. Then we can hardly fish for at least 2 or 3 days after that. Our guide gives you substitute plan if he has in that case, but sometimes there is nothing we can do. In stead of fishing, we will show you around for sightseeing, go for a trekking, and go to unexplored onsen, hot spring. If we meet the worst situation like we cannot do any substitution plans, we should stay in a hotel and just relax. Guide fee for the day will be returned.
When you plan a trip, please consider the weather that might cause you. We would say that you might need 6-7 days if you want your trip well prepared.
How much does private guided trip for one person cost?
Basic guide fee for private guided trip does not change up to 2 people.
How many can participate in a private guided trip?
4 people can be made up of a group. If your group is 5 or more people, you will need to rent a car on your own or hire another guide. Please do not hesitate to contact us.
Can we choose our accommodation by ourselves?
Of course, yes. Please click the box of “book by myself” on your application form. Please ask your guide when you are not sure where to stay. Please note your guide will be arranged after your reservation is confirmed.
I want to choose a hotel I stay, but could you let me know a hotel where I can go fishing by myself around the area?
Yes, we can do that. Please click the box “book by myself”, and let your guide know about this.
I want you to arrange a hotel, but I want to choose it from my list.
We are sorry, but in that case you want to look for a hotel you like, we kindly ask you to make a reservation on your own. Please check “book by myself” and send us a form. When you are not sure where to choose, your guide can give you some advice.
I want to ask you for arranging our hotel, what is the facility like?
Basically, 1 bed room per 1 person. We choose a hotel considering location of restaurants or stores, parking and access to fishing spot, not the natural surroundings or view from the room. If the facility has a hot spring, we put priority. When there are options of rooms either Japanese room or Western room, Japanese room is for Japanese, and Western room is for people from other countries. If we don’t have any requests from customers about facility, comfort class hotels, budget hotel or Japanese style inn will be chosen. Most of those hotels have optional of dinner, but no breakfast. If you have any more requests, please let us know. (e.g. smoking room, free Wi-Fi, same room with your company, and budget for one night…) Please note that changing the reservation cannot be accepted after we receive your form. If you change your mind and decide where to stay, please start over and click “book by myself”.
I’ve already had a place to stay, but I would like to hire a guide. Is it possible?
Of course, it is. Please click “book by myself” on your form.
We want to camp.
Camping is great. It is very popular in Japan as well. If you want to camp, we’ll take you to the camp site. Rental camping gears are available, but please note that a guide will not camp with you. During camping, our guide will not take any responsibility if anything happens. We kindly request you to camp at your own risk.
I will rent a car and drive to the site if possible.
That’s no problem. Please click “Meet up at the site (No pick up)” on your form.
Do I have to pay the gasoline for guide’s vehicle even I will drive a car by myself?
Yes, we ask customers for the gas because our guide will drive there as well and it takes him many hours to drive to get there.
What is a breakdown of gasoline fee for a guide?
The gas for total mileage from where the guide leaves until he returns is calculated in 200yen /liter, and round trip highway toll is added.
During 3 or 4 days private guided trip, I am thinking that I will spend one of these days fishing for a half day and going sightseeing by my rental car for the rest of the day. In that case, what is guided fee going to be like?
Basically, you keep our guide for a private trip, so all expense for the guide will be paid even you don’t fish. Also, if you want to take one day off one of days during your trip, guide fee will be charged.
Can we cook our caught fish?
In principle, we are not allowed to provide customers with anything cooked as our service. Kindly ask you to cook your fish or any meals at your own responsibility. Some of accommodation facilities are cooperative and they can cook your fish for you. If you prefer, please click “book by the guide” on your accommodation. If you live in Japan, the fish can be sent out home by Yamato with cool storage. We can take you to Yamato office, so you can pack it and send it to your place. They have packing boxes from 1000 yen depending on sizes. No courier service to outside Japan.
Is your river float trip chartered or sharing with other people?
It’s chartered. Only your group.
What is your air raft like?
It’s 14 feet long boat. Capacity is 5 people. If more people want to join, please contact us. We might be able to bring another guide and prepare another boat depending on the situation.
Do we load camping gear on a boat and go on a river trip?
We don’t load camping gear on a river trip. This is because rivers in Japan are not so longer and wider compared to those in America or Europe. You will notice that you can see streets and cars running from the rivers and houses are built along them. Even Hokkaido has the lowest population density and is richest in nature out of all islands in Japan, there are no places to camp in river side. So you can go back to your hotel and relax every time you finish your planned course. We hope you enjoy “Japan style fishing”.
Looks like we have only supper during trips. Do we have chances to have other meals?
As Japanese nature is not so as broad as Western countries, we can easily find grocery stores like convenience stores and supermarkets. It is the best way to stop by at these stores and grab your meals in Japan. For example, we leave for salmon fishing at 2:00am in fall, and always have breakfast and buy some lunch at 24/7 convenience store. You can grab whatever you want. This is a good thing about Japan. Do you want to have a cup of dripped coffee at a convenience store at 2:00am with your guide? There are some good restaurants near hotels and some hotels serve supper. So you can choose. If you want to try Japanese traditional food, please let us know. We can arrange it.
Could you tell me about regulation of trout and salmon fishing in Japan?
Hokkaido Government issues regulations concerning fishing (you can check from here). As of 2018, it’s not been translated in foreign languages. Please let us know if you want to know it. At this point, what we have to inform you is trout and salmon fishing is strictly banned in all rivers in Japan.
I want to go salmon fishing with permission in Japanese rivers. Can foreigners get the permit as well? Is the procedure difficult?
Yes, anyone can get the permit. Kamuy is happy to help you to have a license issued.
In which river can we catch salmon with the permit in Hokkaido?
There are two rivers, Churui river and Hamamasu river.
I’ve heard that Hokkaido anglers enjoy salmon fishing in surf. Can foreigners do as well?
Yes. But even salmon fishing in surf, we have strict regulations such as area and period. Unfortunately, some Japanese anglers are found fishing illegally, and visitors who don’t know about it sometimes do the same as illegal anglers. Even if you do it without knowing it, that will be against the law. To avoid the situation, we highly recommend to hire a guide for salmon fishing.
Can we catch trout not salmon in the river?
Yes and no. It’s because there are some limited species and period for trout as well. So please ask your guide.
Do you accidentally catch salmon or trout during river trip? In that case, does it still violate the law?
Sometime we catch them by accident. However, Japanese police will clamp down and deem only when you prepare cooler a box/bag and obviously that the fish are kept for sale or being eaten. When you catch them by accident, please let them go in the water immediately.
How can we be allowed to go in the river fishing area?
Most rivers in Japan are belong to the government, so they don’t regulate to enter the areas. But there are some exceptions. Guides have lots of knowledge of this kind of regulations, and we recommend to go fishing with a guide.
What can we only fish in Hokkaido?
We especially recommend Bluefin tuna fishing near Hakodate. The time is September to December. In other areas, chum salmon and pink salmon fishing are in season.
What do you recommend most, rivers, lakes, or sea?
As known, Japan has smaller land and doesn’t have longer rivers and bigger lakes than other continents. However, it is surrounded by the sea, which is the best part of Japan. Offshore fishing is strongly recommended. We can arrange a boat and all necessary fishing tools. If you plan to stay in Sapporo or Otaru, boat fishing in Shakotan peninshula would be nice. It’s easy and reasonable. We definitely want you to try Yellowtail or Rockfish jigging at first. This boat fishing is not chartered. Other Japanese anglers are in the same boat. If you prefer chartered, please inform us.
What else can you do in offshore boat fishing in Hokkaido?
The most exciting fishing is casting for Bluefin tuna, and followed by dolphinfish and yellowtail. If you can spend your days joining this exciting fishing, please let us know. You’ll have some other options such as casting and bottom fishing for chum salmon. You can catch cod, flounder, masu salmon as well.
Can we fly fish on a boat in the offshore?
Yes, you can. In that case, a boat will be chartered. Please ask our guide for more details.
I’m interested in salmon fly fishing, but if you have any recommendation, I would like to know about it.
What we highly recommend is salmon fly fishing using boat in Shiretoko in August. The boat boat takes you to an island from an island looking for a good spot. Shiny pink salmons actively bite flies. Hopefully, you can catch 10 salmons or more by fly casting. It doesn’t mean it goes everything well, but as far as we know, this trip has a lot more chances to fish salmon with less stress. You can get some ideas from Stephanie’s fishing report, who worked with us last summer. When we went on this trip, our customer Paul tried fly fishing at first, but figured out that he could catch them by changing to spin fishing with bait, after he accepted guide’s suggestion. Paul caught lots of salmon eventually. We’ve already known that we’ll have a lot of pink salmon in the environment. You are lucky because you now know it. Our guides’ schedules are still available. The best season in Shiretoko is for only a month. So book now!
How about fishing in Churui river? It looks good one.
Unfortunately saying this, but number of salmon in Hokkaido is drastically decreasing past two years. Few salmon returned to Churui river in 2017. We were very disappointed with it. It is predicted by relevant organizations that the similar situation will happen in 2018 as well. In 2017, surf casting brought us the best result and No result in Churui river.
What kind of trip do you have if we go and return to Sapporo on the same day?
Our recommendation is boat fishing in Shakotan peninsula. You can expect good catch. We can pick you up at JR Otaru Station. You can eat fish you catch as sushi. Even if you don’t have a company, we will run the trip (minimum 1 person). Adding to this, if you like trout in fresh water than that in sea water, we are happy to guide you to fish pond in Sapporo city. BBQ is an optional. This trip will be available from two people. Or if you can rent a car and come to Niseko, float trip will be available as well. This is the same rates and very reasonable for a group or family up to 5 people.
Could you tell me when and where the best is for rainbow trout fishing with a boat in Hokkaido.
We recommend Shiribetsu in June, July and October, and Tokachi river during July to September.
Could you tell me the best time and place for chum salmon fishing?
We recommend Okhotsk sea and Southern Hokkaido. Both areas have more chances to catch larger salmon called “4-year-fish” which return from the ocean to their native water with four years cycle. Besides, good fishing time in both area is different, so you can enjoy chum salmon fishing for a long time if you like. You can go bottom fishing in Okhotsk sea with a boat from Sep. 1 to Sep. 20, and if spin cast fishing in surf, chance is mid Sep. to beginning of Oct. In Southern Hokkaido, last week of Oct. to mid Nov. is good if casting from a boat. And if you prefer fishing in river outlet, the good time is from the last week of Oct. to the end of Nov.
Could you tell me the best time and place fishing white spotted char in Hokkaido?
There are some areas and different periods. First of all, float fishing is marsh in Eastern Hokkaido during Mar. to May and Shiribetsu river during June to July. Surf casting is Southern part in Mar. and Apr., Tokachi from the end of Apr. to mid May, and Southern part in Dec. and Jan. Finally, Shiribetsu river in June and July and Tokachi from mid Sep. to mid Oc. If river casting.
Could you tell me the best time and place for fishing Ito?
We strongly recommend Northern Hokkaido in Oct. and Nov. Following, marsh in Eastern Hokkaido in Mar., Apr., Nov. and Dec. It might be a smart way to schedule Northern part in the end of Oct. and if the weather turns bad, area will be changed to Eastern part. We can adjust the schedule depending on the weather. Please ask us for details.
Do you have any other suggestions to enjoy fishing?
Yes. Our sample trips are all recommended. However, if you want to make your trip perfect considering a bad weather, you will need 7 days at least.
Do you have any areas you don’t recommend?
Yes. Some rivers and lakes are “too popular”, and too many anglers visit to those places. So you will not expect good fishing. The information posted in internet is mostly relevant to above. “Lake Akan” and “C & R area in Shokotsu river” are good examples. If you want to meet more Japanese anglers than to enjoy fishing, it will be nice. But we will guide you to areas we really want to show you.
